The California Political Precinct Index (CPPI) is an ongoing project by Fall Line Analytics to better characterize political voting trends in California. Taking the methodology from the well-known San Francisco Progressive Voter Index, the CPPI ranks the “political leanings” of nearly every precinct in California on a 0-100 scale.
The CPPI is based on a number of recent ballot initiatives, and correlates extremely well to other known California political trends. When aggregated into various geographies, like counties or Assembly Districts, larger-scale patterns emerge. Also, we can correlate with various demographic variables to build an even more complete model of the California electorate. The CPPI becomes very useful in planning campaign strategies, either at the regional or neighborhood level.
This type of index can be done for any political geography, and can be tailored to local political nuances. Moreover, this type of factor analysis methodology can be applied to corporate and organizational market research as well!
