Setting the Table for Success

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Ethnicity
  • Zip Code
  • Hobbies
  • Occupation
  • Years in residence
  • Kids?
  • Internet use
  • Favorite media
  • These are just some of the important variables that can be correlated to services, purchases, and web visits to see who is using your stuff. Most businesses and organizations can find a way to get this information from their clients.

We like to talk about all of the ways Fall Line's analyses can help your business, organization or campaign, but if you haven't collected any data, then there may not be anything to analyze. One of the most important things you can do to ensure future success is to establish a plan to collect data, so down the road, you can use this information to help you grow by figuring out what worked and what didn't. Whenever you launch a new product, service, website feature, or media campaign, you're going to need some kind of metric – preferably an objective quantitative one – to decide whether or not it's been a success. And if it is a success, who and what made it happen? Thinking about these issues ahead of time is crucial to replicating your efforts, or avoiding past mistakes. For instance, if you're selling a product online, when you ask for their personal info, simply insert a line for gender and an age category (or more). That can be correlated to web usage, clickthrough patterns, and items bought at the website. If a non-profit is going to be offering a new service to clients, it would be extremely helpful to ask the recipients just a few questions to see how the service is working. Over time, this can build up to a substantial analytical database. It just takes a bit of forethought to determine what will be the most useful information to grab. It's much better to incorporate data-gathering procedures and the front end of a project than mid-stream or especially after-the-fact.

    • Iraq Coalition Casualty Count - Regardless of your stance on the Iraq war, fair debates begin with as accurate data as possible. iCasualties.org is a non-partisan, non-affiliated site that uses multiple official sources to estimate American, Allied, police, and civilan casualties overseas. U.S. casualties are broken down by demographics and geography, complete with maps and charts, and animation. We offer no comment on the contents, except to say the methodology is pretty well-done.
